June 19th, 2016 : Father's day - long SMS messages are supported!
For messages with non-ascii characters it was actually 80.
From now on, messages up to 512 characters (ascii) are supported - if they are supported by your carrier (most likely they are).
Messages over 160 characters are split into multiple segments, send separately to your phone, and then 'glued' together when you see them.
Each segment is charged one credit, so for up to 160 characters the charge is one credit, like before. For each additional segment - one extra credit will be charged.
For example - a messages 180 characters long will be charged two credits in total.

The essential role of the markup language is to give authors of synthesizable content a standard way to control aspects of speech output such as pronunciation, volume, pitch, rate, etc..
